Peugeot 307
Ratings
3 stars
Summary
Average. Distinctly average family hatchback with decent all-round talents - but a terrible driving position.
Review
The 307's once-bright case has faded considerably as newer and more talented rivals have entered the family hatchback segment. It's still a decent all-rounder, but it's starting to feel old and slightly off the pace.
The nose-heavy design hasn't aged well at all, especially as time has revealed its snouty looks to have been something of a blind alley in terms of Peugeot styling - the more recent 407 and 207 both look far better. The cabin suffers from some very cheap-feeling trim and, although there's plenty of space for front and rear seat occupants, the driving position is cramped and uncomfortably offset. At least both hatchback and estate versions boast a nice, spacious boot.
Dynamics are unexceptional too - a far cry from the standard set by its great-handling 306 predecessor. The 307's suspension is reasonably comfortable and compliant, but handling feels inert compared to more modern rivals, and petrol-powered versions are let down by a notchy gearchange and a very sharp clutch.
Most buyers will opt for one of the excellent "HDI" diesel versions, the clear highlights of the range - with the 1.6 HDI being particularly impressive for its combination of performance and economy. It's hard to raise much enthusiasm for any of the petrol engines, even the strangely unexciting range-topping 2.0 litre "180".
Ratings Breakdown
Styling
2 star
Time hasn't been kind to the 307's snouty looks. It looks ungainly next to more modern rivals.
Handling
3 star
Completely inoffensive dynamics - it drives well enough providing your expectations aren't high, but you certainly won't remember the journey home.
Comfort
3 star
The compliant ride quality makes for smooth progress over rougher roads, but the cramped driving position is uncomfortable for most on longer journeys.
Quality & Reliability
3 star
Lots of the interior trim materials feels very cheap compared to more upmarket rivals.
Performance
3 star
The basic 1.4 litre petrol motor has to be worked hard but the rest of the range's powerplants give respectable urge. Sensible punters will go for one of the excellent HDI diesels, though.
Roominess
3 star
There's lots of headroom and space to spread yourself out in, but the uncomfortable driving position will offset this for most.
Running Costs
3 star
Another middle-of-the-road performance. Depreciation is steepening and Peugeot dealers aren't the cheapest when it comes to servicing, but the diesel engines turn in very respectable economy.
Value for money
3 star
Fairly priced against rivals considering good levels of standard equipment, but needs a decent discount to become an attractive proposition as a new purchase.
