MG Rover 45

Ratings

Summary

Steer clear. Ancient Honda-based mid sized hatchbacks and saloons that encapsulate Rover's dire predicament. Outclassed, old and poor value.

Review

The 45 wasn't a bad car back when it was launched in 1995 as the Rover 400. But it wasn't a great car either. And in the intervening years the game has moved on dramatically, leaving it ever further behind. On every important category the Rover finds itself chronically outclassed: cabin space, build quality, materials quality, engines, safety and driving dynamics. It's easier to list what 'is' right about the 45 - a comfortable chassis and (in saloon form) a truly enormous boot. Petrol engines all offer adequate performance but lack the refinement of more modern rivals. But at least they're better than the loud, boorish turbo-diesel option.
