Summary

Recommended. Lexus's antidote to the 3 Series has almost got us convinced

Review

There is no tougher automotive segment in the world than the compact executive class, which has long since been ruled over by the BMW 3 Series. And the Lexus IS runs its German rival impressively close, clearly out-pointing it in some areas.

Most impressive is the Lexus's almost uncanny level of refinement, on smooth roads at least. The V6 petrol engine in the IS250 is one of the smoothest units we've experienced, combining whisper-quiet performance with a wonderfully silken power delivery - best experienced through the optional, ultra-smooth six-speed automatic gearbox.

Dynamics are good, with the IS putting on a reasonable display of enthusiasm over a more demanding country road - but over-firm suspension tends to lead to a crashy, uncomfortable ride on bigger bumps. The petrol-powered IS250 puts in a strong performance, too - while still turning in impressive fuel consumption figures. The turbodiesel engine in the IS220d is well-mannered, although not a match for the BMW 320d on performance or refinement.

The IS's cabin is well-finished and practical thanks to well-chosen, tough materials. It's hard not to be disappointed by the dashboard design, though - especially the old-fashioned looking digital displays for the stereo and climate control. Rear seat space is relatively tight and the boot can only offer class average levels of space.

Competitive pricing and excellent standard equipment make the IS an excellent option for private buyers.

Ratings Breakdown

Styling

4 star

Strong visuals give the Lexus far more road-presence than its slightly bland looking predecessor.

Handling

3 star

Keen reactions and plenty of grip, but the crashy ride tends to limit pace on bumpy backroads.

Comfort

4 star

On smooth roads nothing else in the segment comes close to the IS's almost uncanny level of refinement.

Quality & Reliability

4 star

We don't like the 1980s-looking digital displays on the dashboard, but there's no arguing with the Lexus's impressively well-constructed feel. It's a real quality item.

Performance

4 star

The straight-six engine in the IS250 pulls strongly and works particularly well with the optional six-speed autobox. Diesel IS220d is powerful and economical.

Roominess

3 star

Reasonable driving position adjustment, although a cramped footwell can create discomfort in longer journeys. Rear seat space and boot accommodation is relatively tight.

Running Costs

3 star

Short 10,000 mile service intervals will make for plenty of trips to the dealer for average owners. Fuel economy is reasonable and insurance is competitive.

Value for money

4 star

Good standard equipment makes the IS look like conspicuously good value against stripped-out German rivals.

Stereo

4 star

The stereo gives a solid, crisp sound. Satnav works well, but very expensive as an option.
