Jaguar S-Type

Summary

Recommended. Relaxing chassis settings and syrupy smooth engines make the mid-sized Jaguar a fine long distance companion. Substantially improved by recent facelift and new diesel is outstanding.

Review

The retro styling sums up the S-Type's case pretty well: it's a car like Jaguars used to be. Effortless progress comes as standard thanks to a well insulated passenger compartment, comfortable chassis settings and refined engines. That's the good news. The downside comes with high running costs, cramped rear accommodation and cheap-feeling cabin materials that really don't belong in this segment. Entry-level 2.5 V6 engine offers decent progress, makes the more expensive 3.0 V6 look fairly pointless, but the growly 4.2 V8 is wonderfully over-the-top if you can afford it. Pick of the bunch, however, is the 2.7 V6 diesel which has plenty of mid-range pulling power. And we'd pick the smooth shifting six speed autobox over the clunky manual transmission every time.
