Jaguar XK8 (95-05)

Ratings

4 stars

Summary

Recommended. A grand, long-distance coupe in the British tradition which - supercharged XKR version aside - is more gentleman's club than sports car. Massive running costs the downside.

Review

With its 4.2-litre engine, the XK8 provides more than adequate power for a grand tourer, but if you're still wanting more, there's always the supercharged XKR version. A very rapid chunk of solid engineering - that bonnet really is all engine - the XKR is also as smooth as silk. Both models are thirsty, however, especially as they're only available as automatics. The cabin is refined, with enough space for two, plus rear seats that are best used for storage, although there's also an ample boot. Incredibly relaxing both to sit in and to drive, the XK8 does have some excellent competitors - but we'll fight them on the beaches... As the XK reaches the end of its life, you might want to ask if it will ever achieve teh same cult status as the E-Type...
