Hyundai Sonata (98 - 05)

Ratings

3 stars

Summary

Average. A big, cheap saloon offering strong build quality and excellent standard equipment. Suffers from strangely retro styling and poor residuals.

Review

Apart from the strangely cross-eyed styling, the Sonata offers completely unobjectionable transport. It's solidly constructed, well equipped and comfortable to spend time in. Ride quality is good, although cornering is marred by body roll and uncommunicative steering. There's also a toy shop's worth of goodies on the standard equipment list, all versions having six airbags, ABS and air conditioning. The basic 2.0 engine is perfectly decent, but the range-topping 2.7 V6 (with standard autobox) is positively nice - quiet, smooth and free revving. The Hyundai's biggest problem is its steep depreciation. It will be a second-hand bargain, but it would be foolishly brave money invested in a new one.
