Review
Behind its conservative looks this is one of the cleverest cars in the world. The Audi A8 is bursting with technology, not only is it constructed from weight-saving aluminium, but it is also available with a host of clever features, and a very comprehensive options list.
Styling might seem to lack the visual presence of the BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S Class, but the big Audi's more modest aesthetics are likely to find their own appeal among those seeking an ultra-discrete limousine. It looks pretty much like a scaled-up version of the mid-sized A6, complete with Audi's seemingly mandatory "single pane" radiator grille.
It's when you climb inside the A8 that it becomes clear this is something special. Indeed, it's got to be high in the running for being considered the best cabin in the world, regardless of cost. Not only is the standard of fit and finish exemplary, but the modern design and outstanding ergonomics make it a brilliant place to spend time.
Driving manners are similarly effortless, with the A8 wafting away even long journeys with an effortless disdain. It's Autobahn breeding is obvious in brilliant motorway refinement, but even at lower speeds the A8's ride quality remains excellent thanks to supple air springs. Light steering limits the driver's feeling of involvement over a demanding road, but the A8 has loads of grip and corners with a composed confidence. All but the most basic petrol V6 also come with the reassurance of Quattro four-wheel drive.
The entry-level 3.2 litre V6 petrol gives decent performance, enough to render the next-up 3.7 litre V8 mostly pointless, although the 4.2 litre V8 is a magnitude faster. 6.0 litre W12 feels very over-spec - especially as the V10 engined S8 feels considerably more agile. But for most the diesel engines will be the pick of the range, especially the exceptionally refined 4.2 litre V8 TDI.

All versions are respectably rapid with the V10 engined S8 and 6.0 litre W12 giving massive performance. The brawny, ultra-smooth 4.2 litre V8 TDI is a truly amazing engine and the pick of the range.

Occupants enjoy plenty of space both front and rear, with a long-wheelbase version available for those wanting a true chauffeur limousine.
Running Costs

Variable servicing and respectable fuel economy help to keep running costs in check, but depreciation is steep.
