BMW 3 Series

Highly Recommended. BMW's baby executive saloon gets even better with fine engines, sporty handling and a sleek new image. Fun to drive and high secondhand values guaranteed.

BMW 5 Series (96-03)

Recommended. Old, but still a serious executive contender. German build quality combined with outstanding driving dynamics and handsome looks. Expensive, though.

BMW 3 Series Compact

Recommended. If space isn't an issue then the baby BMW is an enjoyable car to drive - latest versions have smart looks too. A small executive coupe that oozes quality.

BMW 5 Series

Highly recommended. The styling still splits opinions, but the rest of the package is brilliant.

BMW 7 Series

Recommended. Controversial styling hasn't improved with age, but the 7 Series is still brilliant to drive.

BMW X5 (00 - 06)

Recommended. The ultimate in luxury all road driving, this is as close to piloting a sumptuous estate car, albeit a tall one, as it gets.

BMW Z4

Highly recommended. About the best reason there is not to buy a Porsche Boxster.

BMW X3

Average. Revisions make the X3 better - but it's still not good enough.

BMW 6 Series

Recommended. Fine handling coupe based on the same underpinnings as the 5 Series saloon.

BMW 1 Series

Average. BMW's baby drives brilliantly - but looks, costs and poor practicality tell against it.

BMW 3 Series (98 - 05)

Highly Recommended. Brilliant and mechanically wunderbar. One of these in the drive adds thousands to the value of your house, too. Enough said.

BMW X5

Recommended. BMW's latest X5 is still the definitive on-roading off-roader and - Porsche Cayenne aside - remains the most fun SUV to drive.
